You don't smear petroleum on your dog's nose,
do you? ...and yet we all do it."

Does your dog ever suffer from a dry nose, you usually get the advice to smear petroleum jelly on it.
Usually the argument comes after it, because it is cheap. And there it goes wrong for many already...

Read along and draw your own conclusion.

What is it
Vaseline is a residual product from petroleum extraction. It is also called petroleum, liquid paraffin or mineral oil.
This means it is not eco-friendly or sustainable. In unpurified form it can contain carcinogenic substances, in purified form it is stripped of these. It is resistant to the action of virtually all chemicals.
Petroleum jelly has long been used to lubricate squeaky hinges or to prevent rust on metal parts.
In addition, it is also used in beauty products because it is cheap and odorless.

Plus point
It helps to counteract the loss of moisture and maintain the existing Hydration subcutaneously.
It puts a film on the skin, so to speak. Kind of a barrier.

Minor point
Counteracting moisture loss sounds good, however this means that the product  a watertight barrier behind.
So you are actually suffocating the pores by keeping moisture and oxygen out by closing off the outer layer of the skin.

This is a good thing.

Conclusion
So if you assume to moisturize the skin with petroleum jelly you are actually closing it off and you are then actually suffocating the pores because you are keeping oxygen and moisture away.
Cosmetic companies use the product because it is incredibly cheap. However, Vaseline does nothing to hydrate and nourish the skin.

Alternative
If you are looking for a one of a kind natural product to retain moisture and nourish the skin we naturally have a number of products that can achieve this. And yes, they are a little more expensive than that jar of Vaseline. But it is up to you which product you prefer to use for your dog.
